The other hospitals may appeal the decision.

“We’re excited to proceed,” said Stan Taylor, WakeMed vice president of corporate planning.

Because of its new patient tower, WakeMed had some free space near its existing 84 rehab beds and will not require any new construction for the $2.4 million, 7,300 square-foot renovation project to add the beds, explained Robbie Roberts, WakeMed planning and regulatory consultant.

“Barring any appeals, we could get started fairly quickly,” Taylor said.

WakeMed plans to award a construction contract by March 15, 2012 and open the beds to patients by Oct. 1, 2012.

WakeMed needed approval because of the state’s certificate of need process, which regulates health care providers on the number of beds and high-end medical equipment they may have. The Division of Health Service Regulation decides where there is a need and hospitals must apply for permission to add the beds or other medical devices, like MRI scanners for example.

To add the beds, some of the applicants had to build a new structure, so their plans came with higher costs.
