Genetic predisposition to type 2 diabetes associated with restricted adipogenesis
New research shows that genetic predisposition to type 2 diabetes is associated with impaired adipogenesis, making these individuals sensitive to the environment and caloric excess. The study examined adipose cell size, insulin sensitivity , HDL-cholesterol and Apo A1 and Apo B in 164 lean and 500 overweight/obese individuals with or without a genetic predisposition to type 2 diabetes or obesity, along with insulin sensitivity via euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamp in a further 166 nonobese individuals. A genetic predisposition to type 2 diabetes, but not obesity, was found to be associated with an impaired ability to recruit new adipose cells to store excess lipids in the subcutaneous adipose tissue, which was particularly evident in nonobese individuals since obesity itself promotes a dysmetabolic state : e18284).
