Effect of Type 2 Diabetes on the Dynamic Response Characteristics of Leg Vascular Conductance During Exercise

Posted by Justin Murphy 27 Jan, 2011

Researchers from Ireland and New Zealand conducted a study to determine if type 2 diabetes impairs the dynamic response of leg vascular conductance during exercise.  LVC responses were studied in nine subjects with type 2 diabetes as well as 10 heavy controls and eight lean controls.  The researchers used a biexponential function and an estimate of the mean response time .  The time constant of the second phase of LVC was significantly greater in those with type 2 diabetes than either group of controls, which increased MRT for the diabetes group.  According to the authors, the study results support the idea that diabetes impairs dynamic response of LVC, and “suggest that a slowed hyperaemic response in the exercising limb might contribute to an exercise intolerance” in people with diabetes.
