Pick Your Own Strawberries

Introduction

Since most writers are believed to be creators in form of writing something provocative or eye-opening, there are also the proverbial ‘Grammar Nazis’ (or so they’re called) that are always around to pick on their writing.

Or what the New Age types call “nit picking”.

Don’t start a sentence with and ‘and’ or a ‘because’ and for heaven sake, don’t end your sentences with a preposition. What crock?

It makes one wonder what drives these people, and perhaps, the answer is insanity itself when normal readers don’t really care for these rules (but for the message it conveys) except for typos which can be damn annoying and the inability to construct a simple sentence.

There were times when I just wanted to ask them to get a ‘real job’ as they tend to insult another’s intelligence repeatedly but hey… that’s their role to play in the publishing process.

But this whole ability to nitpick can come in handy when it comes to other things, let’s say, picking strawberries… and as always the devil is in the detail!

Pick your own strawberries

It’s a known fact now that several pick-you-own blueberry farms now allow customers to pick their own fruits, among which a variety of strawberries  are normally grown and open for picking during a particular time, mostly in May or June.

While the experience of doing so on your own can be a delightful one especially if you set out to pick these strawberries early in the morning (as by noon, they’re all gone), there are some details that one must look out for in picking the best, and here they are:

1) Since ripe strawberries are obtained seasonally, it is important to only shop for them during the season between May to July. Your chances of obtaining ripe strawberries during this time is much higher than during the other months of the year.

2) Secondly, it is important to distinguish between ripe and unripe strawberries (especially if you are trying to pick them on your own). Ripe strawberries are of a bright red color, a natural shine and fresh-looking green caps that are fully attached to the strawberry, and those are the ones that you must pick immediately! Also, use your nose to smell them for a floral fragrance. These two clues will tell you whether the strawberries you are inspecting are ripe or not. This is first step.

3) The next step is to identify which strawberries are unripe and therefore, avoid them. One should keep in mind that there are no green or white spots on the flesh of the strawberry as these indicate that the strawberry is unripe. On the other hand, a dark red color indicates that the strawberry is overripe, and thus should be avoided as well.

4) Now one should also keep in mind, that the smallest strawberries are sometimes the best! So don’t discard a bright red strawberry just because it is small in size.

5) Finally, if you find blemishes on the strawberry or they are too hard, you should avoid these strawberries. Most strawberries when just ripe have a slight give and so this is another thing that you should watch out for when picking ripe strawberries.

In Closing

And as annoying as it is to deal with nitpickers, one can use this skill to their advantage in other areas of their lives.
