Deepak Chopra Books – For those who wish to overcome stress!
Introduction
Bill Maher, in his documentary ‘Religulous’, quoted that he was promoting doubt whereas every religious leader continues to promote certainty. Laying aside the controversy and the obvious tongue-in-cheek humor that he displayed, if one looks a little closer at what he said, it’s actually true!
And it also brings another question: Which religion is undeniably “certain” with its logic, and holds water?
And the truth perhaps lies in the phrase “I don’t know”.
Swami Vivekananda once said that each one of us must find our own path of spirituality, and hence, also inferred that it was important for us to find something to believe that helped us to “just be”. How cool is that?
Perhaps that’s what makes New Age spirituality so DIY, and so appealing to those who are independent-minded and do not wish to carry out the whims and fancies of some corrupt religious leaders in the world. BTW, not all of them, are corrupt…
Deepak Chopra: Just another Shaman or New Age Guru?
And speaking of New Age spirituality, one name that resonates through out Western society today is Deepak Chopra, who started off as a doctor but upon coming across the Transcendental Meditation technique by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, decided to switch to a career (if we can call it that!) in spirituality.
And in doing so, went deeper into the “movement” that was based on the aforementioned technique, studying Ayurveda and after spending a good amount of time being the assistant to Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, decided to part ways.
Chopra Meditation: A New Beginning
Indeed, it was time to ‘do his own thing’ or ‘find his own path’ as soon after this life-changing event took place, he began to focus his attention to the task of publishing self-help books on various themes in New Age spirituality and alternative medicine. (Being an Indian myself, I know both of these aspects go hand-in-hand as opposed to Western medicine, and which was why he was taking this twin approach, so to speak!)
One of the recurring themes in these Chopra meditation books is ridding of negative emotions and by developing intuition by listening to signals of the body.
In writing almost 57 books, he has been touted to be “one of the pre-eminent leaders of the mind-body-spirit movement”.
The Books of Deepak Chopra
Throughout his career as a writer, he opposed the excess intake of medication (prescription drugs) in the form of antibiotics, tranquilizers and sleeping pills which he felt, wasn’t solving anything. To him, meditation [much like Swami Vivekananda] was the key to leading a life where one can overcome stress and everyday issues.
Out the 57 books that he wrote, an astounding 20 million copies of these books have been sold worldwide while also being translated into 35 languages.
While his first book “Creating Health” gave him international recognition, the books “Peace is on the way” and “The Book of Secrets: Unlocking the Hidden Dimensions of your life” won the Quill and the Nautilus awards consecutively.

In Closing
And while Deepak Chopra continues to preach the message that “love, health and happiness are possible, that mystery is real and that the universe is ultimately a friendly and benevolent place where orthodoxies old and new can meet and make peace with one another”, Swami Vivekananda preached that very message.
And yes, Hinduism is not a religion of certainties but [much like these great men] speak of the endless possibilities and potential of man… and perhaps, one of the reasons why Bill Maher did not criticize Hinduism in his documentary!
