THURSDAY, March 29 (HealthDay News) — Although eight states boosted their sales taxes on cigarettes over the past two years, that’s a decline in the number of such increases by states compared to 2009, a new report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows.

One thing that smoking prevention experts know from accumulated data is that smoking rates decline as cigarette prices go up, the CDC said.

Discovery might lead to new ways to prevent or treat the fatal heart problem.

THURSDAY, Feb. 23 (HealthDay News) — The first molecular evidence linking circadian rhythms — the “body clock” — to sudden cardiac death could lead to new methods of diagnosis and therapy to treat or prevent the fatal heart problem, a new study suggests.

Abnormal heart rhythms called ventricular arrhythmias are the most common cause of sudden cardiac death, which is the primary cause of death from heart disease. Experts have long noticed that ventricular arrhythmias occur most often in the morning waking hours, with a smaller peak in the evening hours.

Despite knowing about this increased risk in the morning and evening, scientists haven’t been able to pinpoint the molecular basis for these daily patterns.

Less than two months after winning power in Moroccos elections, the moderate Islamic party of Prime Minister Abdelilah Benkirane is surprising opponents by moving to relax the countrys strict abortion laws. In an interview last week, a top aide to Mr. Benkirane, Mustapha Khalifi, speaking in a personal capacity, confirmed media reports that the prime minister would support an initiative to allow abortions in cases of rape and incest. Mr. Khalifi, subsequently appointed the communications minister, said in an interview that the government should push ahead with a proposal, drafted by the social and family affairs minister in the previous government, Nouzha Skalli, to address the steep rise both in illegal abortions and in the number of unmarried mothers caught in the poverty trap.
