So, I’m completely done registering. And my baby shower invites have been sent out. Most have reached their destinations, some are still en route. A few people who haven’t yet received their propositions to buy me stuff have asked me, via text or Instant Message, “Where are you registered?” To which I respond with the baby emporium my husband and I chose. And then the slightest twinge of anxiety begins to set in. I feel like I’m about to be judged.

Before I get into it, you should know, I have a problem with feeling like I’m putting people out.

I have always been troubled by reports of marathoners suffering from heart attacks in the midst of a race. I’m not a runner and those 26.2 miles looks pretty grueling to me. Could running a marathon kill you?

That seems highly unlikely, according to a new report published online in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Researchers studied the number of cardiac arrest cases in runners who took part in marathons and half marathons in the U.S. from Jan. 1, 2000, to May 31, 2010. Of the 10.9 million runners, only 59 suffered cardiac arrest.

That’s actually a tiny number, considering the overall number of marathoners. The researchers say cardiovascular disease accounted for the majority of the cardiac arrests.

By Steven ReinbergHealthDay Reporter

MONDAY, Jan. 9 (HealthDay News) — There really is such a thing as heartbreaking grief, suggests new research that finds losing a loved one can increase the risk of heart attack.

Within a day of a significant other’s death, heart attack risk was 21 times higher than normal, said researchers who looked at data on nearly 2,000 heart attack patients. And within the first week after death, the heart attack risk for the bereaved was still six times greater than usual.

“Extreme grief can trigger heart attacks,” said lead researcher Dr.

FRIDAY, Dec. 30 (HealthDay News) — Researchers have identified three gene abnormalities that appear to raise the likelihood for developing the thyroid cancer, with one in particular — the PTEN gene — implicated in children’s risk for the disease.

Dr. Charis Eng, founding director of the Genomic Medicine Institute of Cleveland Clinic’s Lerner Research Institute, said in a news release that her team’s “investigation into the genetics behind thyroid disease raises important details relevant to diagnosis and treatment. We hope to promote the earliest diagnosis and most targeted treatment possible.”

The researchers unearthed the gene-cancer risk link by examining and tracking roughly 3,000 patients, many of whom had already been diagnosed with a different disease called Cowden syndrome.

Leaders of the global fight against AIDS say male circumcision is among the most overlooked keys to reducing the incidence of sexually transmitted infections. At the international conference on AIDS in Africa, major funders are urging nations to take greater responsibility for education, treatment and prevention campaigns. The United Nations AIDS organization and the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) announced a five-year campaign to persuade men in 14 African countries to voluntarily submit to circumcision. Recent studies suggest that circumcision reduces the risk of female-to-male sexual transmission of HIV infections by roughly 60 percent. Read more…

Are you pregnant? Are your lady friends planning a big pink or blue bash in your honor? That is super nice, and you should thank those gals for making the effort. But why not slip your partner’s name into the mix when they ask you to provide an invite list? After all, he’s responsible for half of that baby’s DNA in there. Why can’t he celebrate? Convincing millions of people to behave in a healthier way is not easy, but in the past two decades, U.S. public health officials have been remarkably successful in getting large numbers of people to quit smoking by banning smoking in public places and raising taxes on cigarettes.

Now, a federal judge has blocked a bold new anti-smoking effort. The FDA wants to require tobacco companies to put graphic images of the effects of smoking on cigarette packages. Yesterday, U.S. District Judge Richard Leon said that five cigarette companies that are suing to block the FDA requirement will “suffer irreparable harm” and called for a judicial review of the FDA rule.

The FDA had required that cigarettes sold in this country would have to have the graphic images starting in September 2012.
