What Google is attempting for books, the University of California, Berkeley, plans to do for the world’s vertebrate specimens: store them in “the cloud.”

Online storage of information from vertebrate collections at the Smithsonian Institution, American Museum of Natural History, National Museum of Natural History in Paris, UC Berkeley’s Museum of Vertebrate Zoology (MVZ) and from hundreds of other animal collections around the world – or at least, all collections that include animals with backbones – will make them readily available to academic researchers and citizen scientists alike.

Computing clouds are shared pools of servers that can be accessed from anywhere, anytime, and are far more reliable than computer servers at individual institutions.

Nearly 35,000 adults (aged 55 to 64) in Italy were randomized to sigmoidoscopy or to no screening. Just over half of intervention patients actually underwent sigmoidoscopy.

During 11 years’ follow-up, colorectal cancer was diagnosed in 251 intervention patients and 306 controls, and colorectal cancerrelated death occurred in 65 and 83, respectively. In intention-to-treat analyses, sigmoidoscopy was associated with a significant, 18% reduction in cancer incidence and a nonsignificant, 22% reduction in mortality. Read more…

The link between dysglycemia and heart failure is not well understood. This knowledge gap was addressed in a Swedish observation study. The cohort consisted of 20,985 adults with type 1 diabetes who were heart failure-free at baseline . A fairly young cohort with a mean age of 38.6 years at baseline was followed up until December 2009, or until death or hospitalization due to heart failure. Incidences of hospital admission due to primary/secondary heart failure was 3.38 cases per 1,000 patient years during the median 9-year follow-up period. When stratified according to hemoglobin A1c levels, incidences of heart failure increased with HbA1c levels and was higher in patients with a HbA1c of 10.5% or more than in subjects with a HbA1c < 6.5%.

Often when I travel, it seems like I need to increase my insulin basal rates, but racing this week in Wisconsin required a surprisingly large adjustment.  Leading up to the start of the series for me, I had my basal rates on increased “taper” mode, which is what I try to remember to use when I have a rest week in my training or am tapering my training before a race.  (With a decreased training load, I need more insulin.)

After arriving in Wisconsin for my first race (Friday),  I turned on my “race day” basal rate profile.  Th

If you are one of the thousands of hardworking people who own and run their own personal businesses, then you need to protect everything you’ve worked for. All the time, money, effort and vision you’ve put into creating a successful business could be at risk at any time from a lawsuit. Now, you may think that none of your customers could ever have any reason to sue you, but remember that not everyone is reasonable. Frivolous lawsuits abound and no matter how innocent you are, you could end up losing a lot of money.

The structure of a small business is such that your personal assets are not separated from your business assets. So if someone has a problem with something your company has done, you could stand to lose your house, your savings, and nearly the shirt off your back if you’re so unfortunate. The p Read more…

I am excited to have this opportunity to write a diabetes-focused blog for Diabetes Health about living and thriving with type 1 diabetes. First of all, I am extremely passionate about racing road and mountain bicycles, running 5K runs and sprint triathlons, and doing other activities that I find to compete in for Team Type 1. But before I start blogging, I would like to tell a little about myself.

I am 22 years old and have had type 1 since I was seven years old. I remember the first time I met my endocrinologist, Dr. Larry Deeb, in Tallahassee, Florida.  He walked into my room at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, looked over a chart with various notes, grabbed my thigh, and injected me with insulin.

Treatment intensification is recommended for patients with type 2 diabetes that are not meting glycemic targets, yet new research indicates that the median time to treatment intensification in patients who fail metformin monotherapy is over a year in the United States. The retrospective analysis identified 12,566 patients with T2DM and an HbA1c of ≥ 7% or at least two fasting blood glucose levels of ≥ 126 mg/dL while on metformin monotherapy for at least 6 months from a large U.S. electronic medical record database. Patients were 51% female, had a mean age of 63 years and mean index HbA1c of 8%, with 66%, 19% and 15% of patients having an index HbA1c of 7 to < 8%, 8 to < 9% and < 9% to ≥ 9%, respectively. The m
